Domestic collection of Recyclables
- Monthly Bin Collection:
Residents in Karoonda and Wynarka can have their Yellow Top 240L recycling bin collected on the second Tuesday of every month.
- Recycling Depot Drop-Off:
Recyclables can also be dropped off at the Karoonda Waste Depot (Roberts Road, Karoonda) free of charge during these hours:- Wednesdays: 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM
- Once a month on Sundays: 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM (refer to the 2026 Waste Calendar for dates).
What Household Items Can Be Recycled?
Make sure all items are clean and prepared as described below:
- Paper & Cardboard: Newspapers, magazines, envelopes, egg cartons, flattened cardboard boxes, and advertising materials.
- Cartons: Rinsed and flattened juice and milk cartons.
- Glass: Rinsed glass bottles and jars (lids removed).
- Aluminium & Steel: Cans, lids, and empty aerosol cans.
- Plastic: Rigid plastic containers like drink bottles, yoghurt containers, and detergent bottles (rinsed and lids removed).
drumMUSTER - Collection Program
The District Council of Karoonda East Murray offers a monthly drumMUSTER collection for recycling farm chemical containers.
- When: First Thursday of each month (except January).
- Where: Council Depot, Tower Drive, Karoonda.
- How to Participate: Appointments are required. Call (08) 8578 1004 and provide the number of drums you plan to bring.
All farm chemical users within the Karoonda East Murray region are encouraged to bring their empty 1 – 205L, properly cleaned, non-returnable, steel and plastic farm chemical containers to the Council Depot for inspection and collection.
What’s Accepted:
- Cleaned, non-returnable steel and plastic farm chemical containers (1–205L).
- Drums must be properly rinsed inside and out (including caps and threads) and air-dried in accordance with the "Agsafe Standard for Effective Rinsing of Farm Chemical Containers."
What’s Not Accepted:
- Containers larger than 205L.
- Drums that are unclean, partly filled, or contain rinse water.
Important To Note:
- Metal and Plastic farm chemical drums WILL NOT be taken at the Karoonda Recycling Depot. The District Council of Karoonda East Murray has drumMUSTER collection days for recycling of this material.
- Remember all drums must be correctly cleaned both inside and out (including caps and threads) and allowed to air dry to ensure they contain no rinse water in line with the "Agsafe Standard for Effective Rinsing of Farm Chemical Containers".
- Containers larger than 205L unclean or partly filled containers will not be accepted at our drumMUSTER site, these will remain the property of the chemical user.

Waste Oil Collection
Residents can recycle certain types of oil at the Council Depot, Tower Drive, Karoonda.
- How to Participate: Appointments are required. Call (08) 8578 1004.
Accepted Oils:
- Engine oil
- Hydraulic oil
- Transmission oil
- Transformer oil (with a NATRA Test result of <2 parts per million of PCB)
- Waste diesel
Not Accepted:
- Cooking oil
- Petrol
