SALA Festival Returns to Karoonda with ‘Think Big’ Exhibition, Evening Under the Stars & Regional Bus Tour

The District Council of Karoonda East Murray is thrilled to announce the return of SALA at the Silos for its fifth year, featuring the ‘Think Big’ exhibition, An Evening Under the Stars celebration plus it’s inclusion in an exclusive SALA Art Bus Tour.

SALA at the Silos: ‘Think Big’ Exhibition

Karoonda’s iconic silos will once again become a feature during the statewide SALA Festival as a canvas for stunning digital projections with the ‘Think Big’ exhibition.

Showcasing work from 31 talented artists from various regions across the state, including photographers, painters, digital graphic artists, and illustrators. This unique outdoor exhibition will light up the main street silos from sunset to 11 pm starting from 1 August and playing each night throughout the month.

The exhibition encourages artists to explore the scale, possibility, and imagination of public art, presenting their creations in a format different from the traditional gallery walls. To view the full list of artists involved visit salafestival.com.

An Evening Under the Stars celebration

To celebrate the festival’s return to Karoonda, “An Evening Under the Stars” will be held on Saturday, 3 August, from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Set beneath a clear marquee in front of the Karoonda Silos, the evening will feature all-you-can-eat wood-fired pizza, a live painting session by Gudjula & Girramay Woman, Kat Bell, a pop-up art gallery by local artists, and a viewing of the ‘Think Big’ exhibition on the silos. The event is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy art, food, and community spirit.

Tickets to the event have already sold out but you can register for the waitlist via the website link here.

District Council of Karoonda East Murray Mayor Caroline Phillips said the Silo’s inclusion in the statewide SALA program helps to further raise the profile of the town’s silos as a popular visitor attraction.

“Participating in our fifth SALA Festival will continue to raise the profile of Karoonda and our silo artwork across South Australia. By leveraging state festivals, we aim to attract more visitors to our district, stimulating local businesses and boosting the regional economy.”

“This year’s event on the 3rd of August illustrates this strategy, with the majority of the participating artists coming from outside our region. We’ve already seen an increase in bookings at the Karoonda Tourist Park over that weekend period, with artists eager to see their work displayed on the silos and bringing their friends and family along with them.”

SALA Art Bus Tour

For the first time, the SALA Festival has organised a regional SALA Art Bus Tour, and Karoonda is delighted to be one of the featured stops. Departing Adelaide on Saturday 3 August guests can enjoy an exclusive experience aboard the ‘Adelaide Hills to Karoonda Lights Bus Tour’ – including behind-the-scenes talks at Hahndorf Academy, a visit to the new Ondeen center, an exclusive mini tour at Monarto Safari Park, and a final stop at Karoonda Silos for the Evening Under the Stars event. Tickets for this tour can be purchased through the SALA Festival website.

Mayor Phillips expressed excitement, saying, "We are thrilled to be included in SALA’s bus tour from Adelaide. This brings a whole new set of eyes to our region, attracting those who might not have known about us before. It further highlights our efforts as a council to draw attention to the unique offerings of Karoonda and the wider Murray River Lakes and Coorong region."
