Prepare Your Property for Fire Danger Season

Property owners have a legal responsibility to reduce fire hazards on their land. Keeping your property clear of excess vegetation and debris helps protect lives, homes, and neighbouring properties. Reducing fuel and managing on-site vegetation, such as grass, tree cuttings, or litter, is the best way to minimise the risk of fire.

The Fire Danger Season for 2026/2027 for the Murraylands region is:

  • Start: 01 November 2026
  • End: 30 April 2027

Now is the time to ensure your yard, block, or land is cleared and maintained throughout the season.

Council requirements for land management:

  • Land under 1 hectare: Maintain all undergrowth at or below 10 cm (4 inches) in height.
  • Vacant land over 1 hectare: Establish and maintain a fuel break around the perimeter at least 5 m wide, with all grass, weeds, pest plants, and undergrowth reduced to a maximum of 10 cm (4 inches).
  • Rural land: Clear grass, weeds, and undergrowth within 5 m of dwellings and 20 m of sheds.

Please note: A single mow or slash will not satisfy the legal requirements under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005.

Council conducts annual property inspections prior to the Fire Danger Season and may issue hazard reduction notices where necessary. Landowners are responsible for monitoring and maintaining their land. If needed, engage an appropriate service provider to assist with clearance.
