Open Address to the Community: Recognising the Tough Agricultural Season
A Letter from the Office of the Mayor:
Recognition of Tough Agricultural Season and Affirming Support for Primary Producers
As Mayor of the District Council of Karoonda East Murray, I write on behalf of the Council to acknowledge the severe challenges facing our agricultural sector during, what is being recognised as, one of the worst growing seasons on record.
The current conditions have placed immense strain on our region's primary producers, many of whom will endure extreme hardship in future months as a result. The impacts of drought, unpredictable weather patterns and challenging soil conditions, have compounded to create an incredibly difficult environment for our farmers to produce the quality yields they strive for year after year.
Agriculture is the backbone of our community, and the toll this season has taken on farmers is deeply felt across the entire region, and the state. From the farms themselves to the local businesses that depend on their success, we recognise that the ripple effects are far-reaching, affecting everyone in our community.
We acknowledge that hard decisions are currently being made for a lot of farming operations, and we acknowledge the resilience and determination of our primary producers; who despite these challenges, continue to contribute tirelessly to our region. We urge the wider community to offer support where possible, and to understand the ongoing challenges our farmers face at this time.
In tough times we, as a community, need to look out for each other, as such Council urge you to check-in on your neighbours, friends, and family, offering support where needed. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should face these challenges alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to local mental health services, and let’s continue to build a community that cares for and uplifts one another.
We stand united in our commitment to support our primary producers, and as local leaders, Council will continue to advocate for additional resources and long-term support from both the State and Federal Governments. We will also be working closely with local organisations, industry bodies and community groups to ensure that our farmers and their families have access to the support services they need.
Yours sincerely,
Mayor Caroline Phillips
