Scott Reflects on His First 3 Months with Council
I simply cannot believe that my time here in Karoonda has passed so quickly, with me clocking up three months already. Over this time, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting the people of the district.
I’d especially like to thank the more than 50 people that came out to chat as part of the four community drop-in sessions recently held. My take aways from the four sessions (or what have since jovially been referred to a ‘Scott’s District Roadshow’) was that as a priority, the community want usable roads across the district, with extra attention focussed on the transport roads.
Additionally, the community want a dog park in Karoonda, and some small-scale low-cost community events held around the district – whether a movie night, a drive-in, a community dinner or BBQ, or fundraiser. I think all of these are possible, and a great opportunity to come together. I’m looking forward to what we can deliver in 2025. Stay tuned.
I do think it’s important though, to note that there will likely be some challenging times ahead in the coming months; specifically relating to the current agricultural season. As Mayor Phillips stated in her ‘Open Address to the Community’ late last month, “in tough times we, as a community, need to look out for each other, […] and offer support where possible”. This sentiment is vitally important, and if nothing else, I think perhaps all the more reason for council to facilitate community events to bring everyone together.
Over the past three months, I think we have started to stabilise after what has been a tumultuous period. I see cohesion forming between Council, staff and the community as engagement, communication and transparency increases. I’m looking forward to what’s next, as this is only just the beginning.
