Infrastructure & Roads
Councils play a key role in keeping communities connected and safe through the management of local roads and transport infrastructure.
While the state government is responsible for major roads and public transport systems, such as highways, buses, and trains, local councils manage more than 75,000 kilometres of local roads across the state.
Our district has an extensive road network, around 1,168 kilometres of roads, including 118 kilometres of sealed roads, that’s roughly the same distance as driving from Karoonda to Birdsville!
Council responsibilities in this area include:
- Maintaining and repairing local roads to ensure they remain safe and reliable.
- Constructing and maintaining footpaths and cycling paths to support safe and active travel.
- Managing parking spaces, installing signage, and issuing parking permits to ensure fair and efficient parking.
- Setting appropriate speed limits and installing traffic and safety signs.
- Developing traffic management plans for community events and festivals.
- Coordinating street cleaning to maintain safe and tidy public spaces.
- Implementing measures to improve pedestrian safety and assist with safe street crossings.
