Our Silo Art

Paint by day

“It is the largest mural I have completed so far and stands as a milestone in my personal career achievements.” Heesco is a world-renowned and highly sought after street and mural artist based in Melbourne. He was born and raised in Mongolia and moved to Australia in 1999. Silo Art is quickly becoming his speciality with the Karoonda silos being the third silo project since 2017.

“A big added challenge was painting during the winter months of June and July, battling rains and winds.” Heesco found the Karoonda project tested his stamina at times, but one that stood out as
career highlight. “For a massive project like this, it is always important that everyone involved works together towards the end goal, all the elements need to line up to create the final result, and this silo project stands as a great testament of such a collaboration.”

Heesco’s brief was to incorporate community feedback into an artwork that encapsulates local Mallee life, both now and in the past. Additionally, the work had to ‘frame’ up the silos and create an
embedded canvas for the night projections. The concept shows that animals are a key aspect of the unique Mallee identity and serves as a reminder to the district’s railway heritage. Diamond the sheep and Whiskey the kelpie for example are representations of well-known local icons, the sheep and the trusted working dog.

Paint by night

The Karoonda Silo comes to life each night, with illuminated artwork which provides an ever-changing digital art canvas in the heart of the Mallee. The combined mural and projection concept of Karoonda Silo has been the first of its kind in Australia, bringing together stunning painted artwork, and a night display that glows with creative spirit and pride, original images and inspirations that will continue to change with the seasons of the Mallee.

The concept has been created by projection art specialists and community arts company illuminart, directed by Cindi Drennan and Craig Laurendet. The team combine their talents to highlight that is special, distinctive, unique or signifcant about a place, transforming it with stories in light so that visitors and residents will have a new perspective about that part of the world. Working with Karoonda to create the projection, illuminart created a signature piece inspired by aspects of the region that the community had nominated and felt proud of. The innovative display often features other contributions, as the projected digital display will be programmed to provide opportunities for visual artists to make a big creative splash. The projection component is manage and curated by Council and we proudly support South Australian talent.

Completed in June 2019.
