District Council of Karoonda East Murray Unveils Vibrant 2024 Silo Projection Calendar

Published 17th January 2024

The District Council of Karoonda East Murray is thrilled to announce the launch of an exciting and colourful silo projection calendar for the new year, showcasing the rich artistic talent and vibrant community spirit in the heart of the Mallee region.

In 2024, there is a key focus on featuring illuminating artwork by local artists and community groups from the Murray River, Lakes, and Coorong region, including:

  • Nat Koch: A local resident of Karoonda East Murray, who recently completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Art at UniSA.
  • Karoonda Farm Fair & Show: Hosting a photography competition on the silos in April, encouraging entries that capture the essence of the Murraylands region.
  • Mallee Kids Childcare: Brightening up the silos with their creative contributions in June.

The silos will also serve as the canvas for two state festivals in 2024:

  • History Festival (May): A first-time collaboration, bringing historical tales of Karoonda and the wider district to life on the silos.
  • SALA (August): Marking the 5th consecutive year of participation, promising an even more spectacular display of artistic flare.

But that’s not all! The season also sees an exciting ray of talented South Australian artists joining the nighty projections, including: Saskia & Shadow (Elle Dawson-Scott), TaylrJay, Alice Lindstrom, John Freeman, Shane Cook, Simone Ridge-Cooke, and Debby Haskard-Strauss.

As a special highlight, to celebrate the painted silos' 5th anniversary in July, Council has invited renowned street artist Heesco back to the silos to showcase his own nightly projection. Heesco, completed the iconic painting of the Karoonda Silos in July 2019. His projection show promises to provide a unique behind-the-scenes look at the painting process of the silos, contrasting daytime views with night-time projections.

"The day-night silo art projection has been a game-changer for our local economy. Occupancy at the Karoonda Tourist Park has almost tripled since we introduced the attraction, and local businesses have flourished," says Mayor Caroline Phillips. "The night-time projection keeps the concept fresh, providing visitors with a compelling reason to keep returning."

Mayor Phillips adds, "Each year, we aim to evolve the silo features and enhance the storytelling power behind the projections, and 2024 certainly promises this."

The nightly projection show runs every night of the year, rain, hail or shine, from sunset for approximately 3 hours. For the complete 2024 projection calendar, please visit Karoonda's official website www.karoonda.com.
