Cr Terrell to step down, encourages new representatives to join KEM Council

Karoonda East Murray Councillor Morris Terrell has announced he will not stand at the upcoming Local Government elections in November, paving the way for new community representatives at the regional Council.

Cr Terrell, who was elected in 2014, says it has been rewarding to serve the community through his work on various working parties, including the Karoonda Area School Swimming Pool Joint Working Party and the Memorial Gates Advisory Group

“It was wonderful to work with Margaret Size on the upgrading of the memorial gates at Karoonda Oval, an important community project backed by Council,” he says.

In 2017, an honour roll inscribed with the names of 600 local veterans who served in conflicts spanning from World War I to Afghanistan was unveiled at the memorial gates, and attended by hundreds of people.

In preparation for the official opening, Cr Terrell spent hours repairing and modifying the old 1950s wrought iron gates himself.

“You spend hours and hours with these groups and there’s so much personal satisfaction in being able to see these projects come to fruition,” he says.

Cr Terrell, who is also Vice-chair of the Murray Mallee Aged Care Group, says he’s looking forward to devoting more time to his community pursuits.

2018 has been a year of change for the small regional Council, with Mayor Kevin Burdett also announcing in June he will not run for the role again, leaving the position after eighteen years.

Cr Terrell joined Council Chief Executive Officer Matthew Morgan in encouraging any interested community members to look at joining Council.

“It’s always good to have new blood in organisations and with people stepping down, there is an opportunity for renewal at the upcoming elections,” Cr Terrell says.

“Karoonda is a proud town and we need to keep reminding people that nothing happens without effort.

“I’ve got a lot of faith in the Council and would encourage anyone to step up and take on a Council role.”
